Are you feeling numbness in your thumb, index, or middle finger? Does pain wake you at night? These could be signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition I’ve helped many clients manage. If you’re struggling with these symptoms, let me walk you through what’s happening and share a few tips that can help.
I’m Hoang Tran, the owner of Hands-on Therapy Services and a certified hand therapist. Years ago, I built my dream therapy-owned business to help people recover from injuries—whether they’ve had surgery and want the best results or are trying to avoid pills, injections, and surgery altogether.
I’ve also written The Hands-on Approach: How to Get Rid of Hand and Shoulder Pain Without Pills, Injections, and Surgery because I’m passionate about empowering others to take control of their hand health.
Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm into your hand, becomes compressed at the wrist. This nerve controls sensation and movement in parts of your hand, so when it’s under pressure, you might feel numbness, tingling, or pain in your fingers or palm. Over time, even simple tasks like typing, holding objects, or sleeping can become difficult.
Why Symptoms Are Often Ignored
One of the challenges with carpal tunnel syndrome is that symptoms often come and go. Because the pain or numbness isn’t constant, many people dismiss it as something minor. Unfortunately, waiting too long can cause the symptoms to worsen, leading to persistent pain, stiffness, or discomfort that disrupts daily life.

The Deceptive Nature of Symptoms
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be tricky. The pain and numbness often come and go, so many people think it’s not a big deal. But waiting too long can make things worse. Over time, the symptoms can get more serious, like constant pain or feeling stiff and sore in the mornings.
Three Effective Tips for Relief
Let’s dive into three tips I often share with my clients to help alleviate hand pain and numbness from carpal tunnel syndrome:
1. Embrace the Heat
Nerve problems respond well to heat therapy. Try applying heat around your wrist and hand area at the end of a busy day or before bed. This can help soothe the irritated nerve and promote better circulation in the affected area.
How to Apply Heat Effectively:
- Use a heating pad or warm compress for 15-20 minutes.
- Ensure the temperature is comfortable and not too hot to avoid burns.
- Apply heat before bed to help reduce nighttime symptoms.
2. Nighttime Bracing – But Only for a Month
Wearing a wrist brace can be beneficial, but only if done correctly. I recommend wearing a wrist brace at night, but only for one month. If you don’t see improvement within that time frame, something else is likely going on, and continued bracing won’t help.
Choosing the Right Brace:
- Look for a brace that keeps your wrist in a neutral position.
- Ensure it’s not too tight – you should be able to slide a finger under it comfortably.
- Remove the brace during the day to allow for normal movement and circulation.
3. Avoid Making a Fist
This might sound surprising, but constantly closing your hand can exacerbate carpal tunnel syndrome. When you make a fist, the muscles in your hand push into the carpal tunnel area, potentially increasing pressure on the median nerve.
Alternative Hand Exercises:
- Practice gentle finger stretches throughout the day.
- Try wrist rotations to maintain flexibility without closing your hand.
- Use stress balls or therapy putty for hand exercises that don’t involve making a tight fist.
The Importance of Early Intervention
It’s crucial to address carpal tunnel syndrome early. While these tips can provide relief, they’re most effective when the condition is caught in its early stages. If you’ve been experiencing symptoms for an extended period, it’s essential to seek professional help.
Signs It’s Time to See a Professional:
- Persistent numbness or tingling that doesn’t improve with home remedies
- Weakness in your hand or difficulty gripping objects
- Pain that radiates up your arm
- Symptoms that interfere with sleep or daily activities

Customized Treatment Plans
At my clinic, we offer customized programs designed to help you get rid of carpal tunnel syndrome without resorting to injections or surgery. Even in the most challenging cases, we’ve been able to help clients avoid surgical intervention. By addressing the issue early and with targeted therapy, you can save time, and money, and avoid more invasive treatments down the line.
The Role of a Certified Hand Therapist
As a certified hand therapist, I can provide a thorough evaluation to determine if carpal tunnel syndrome is indeed the root of your symptoms. Sometimes, what appears to be carpal tunnel might be another condition with similar symptoms. A professional assessment ensures you receive the most appropriate and effective treatment.
Prevention Strategies
While treating existing symptoms is crucial, preventing future flare-ups is equally important. Here are some strategies to incorporate into your daily routine:
- Take regular breaks from repetitive hand movements
- Maintain good posture, especially when working at a computer
- Keep your wrists in a neutral position when possible
- Strengthen your hand and wrist muscles with appropriate exercises
- Use ergonomic tools and equipment in your workplace
When to Seek Immediate Help
While many cases of carpal tunnel syndrome can be managed with conservative treatments, some situations require prompt medical attention. Seek immediate help if you experience:
- Sudden loss of feeling in your hand or fingers
- Inability to perform simple hand movements
- Severe pain that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain relievers
- Signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or fever
