Did you know that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is MOST commonly treated by hand surgeons? But why not by Hand Therapy Specialist?
Well…let me tell you a story of one of our client, Mary. This is just one example of many. She was starting to feel some numbness and tingling in her hands like her hands were falling asleep. You know how that feels….most people do. She just would shake it off and it would feel better. After a while….she can’t even remember how long, but it was getting worst and she was starting to wake up feeling really stiff in her fingers like she couldn’t really move them. It would take her a while to get the hand and fingers moving. She had pain at night that would jolt her awake…shaking out her hands.
She started to realize she had carpal tunnel. Maybe a friend of hers had it and she started asking around about it….looked it up on line. See what happens for some people is they have this thing called “carpal tunnel” and it comes and goes but then it’s gone for good and they don’t have to worry. They are like “oh thank goodness it just resolved on its’ own”. But for others, it gets worst. For our client Mary, it was starting to get bad, so she decided to go see her primary care doctor, who upon hearing about her numbness declared that she had carpal tunnel! OK…but now what? She didn’t recall getting recommended for occupational therapy or anything, just told to get one of those over the counter splints to wear.
That was fine until it was not better and so it started to worry her because she saw online all about surgery and didn’t want to have it. SO she decided to go to a hand surgeon….where she waited and waited and waited only to be told YES! You indeed have carpal tunnel but to be really sure….let us get a nerve conduction test because it will indicate how bad it is and then we can have surgery for it. It’s a super easy surgery he said as he explained it all.
Great. She didn’t want surgery, but there she was…only given the option of surgery as she knew it. Now mind you…this was years in the making and by the time she came in to us at Hands On Therapy Services, she had surgery to one hand and was suffering from so much pain…she didn’t know how she was going to have surgery to the other hand next month.
But really out of all the people that suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome at one time or another….only HALF of them seek “medical attention” and that simply means they went somewhere for advice. The other HALF just wait until it gets so bad that they have to have surgery. But how many people come in and get the most NATURAL, CONSERVATIVE treatment for carpal tunnel by getting help with a hand specialist? To be perfectly honest…I don’t know…not enough! Most people who tell me their stories had to have surgery! And they always say they didn’t know that therapy could be an option to help them avoid surgery!
So we offered to help her after her carpal tunnel surgery so she can get back to being able to drive herself around and be active with her dogs. AND we were able to help relief the numbness and pain she had in her other hand so much so that she told the doctor, she didn’t need surgery to her other hand. At the end, she said she wished she knew so that she could have come in years before and avoided all the time she felt crazy with the numbness and could have avoided the pain of the surgery.
