Hand pain and numbness driving you crazy because you always have to find someone else to open things for you? Not only does carpal tunnel syndrome wake you up at night, but it also makes your hands feel tired and “old”. It makes it hard for you to open bottles or containers by yourself. Amongst a host of other things that we can use our hands for.

“This is just what happens when you get old”. NOT TRUE!

I want to encourage you NOT to make that assumption. Aging is a fact of life. No one can get around it. But pain and numbness of your hands does not have to come with age and should not be a symptom of aging!

It is one of the main assumptions that I hear people tend to make which leaves us stuck having to suffer from indecision longer than necessary.

How A Hand Therapist Helps People With Hand Pain and Numbness

I help people of all ages with hand issues and focus on people age 40+ because as we get older, we NEED a little more help and accountability to stay healthier because it doesn’t get easier. For example, carpal tunnel can start at any age but lots of people put off getting real help for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which only gets worse with time.

Last article I gave tips on what you can do for your hands.

Did you know that the nerve that goes to your hands, start from your neck and move down your shoulders?

Yes… and nerves like to MOVE! So, if you want to help your hands feel better, many times we have to check and see if you need some help moving from the neck and shoulder down!

Specific stretches to the neck and shoulder can help reduce the numbness that you feel in your hands. If you are not sure, you can just try some general stretches to get started:

  1. Turn head to the side, then to the other side.

  2. Bring your ear to your shoulder

  3. Hold stretches for 10 seconds, move slowly to the other side and repeat 4-5 repetitions.

These are general stretches, however, if they cause pain or more numbness you should stop and consult a specialist. You can even see some of those videos on our YouTube channel at Hands-on Therapy Services.
