What does it mean to be a Miami occupational therapist? Hoang Tran – a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) from Hands on Therapy Clinic shares her thoughts with her patients :
First and foremost, I feel extremely lucky to be able to carry out the job that gives me a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction, especially when I witness my patients’ recovery from their injuries. Being a Miami Occupational therapist allows me to work with and help people of all ages; some of my patients are infants, others are elderly. I use highly specialised assessment and treatment to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people suffering from injuries or disabilities. Practitioners of my profession enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, prevent injury or live better with illness, or disability.
Perhaps the term “occupational therapy” may sometimes be confused for being a vocational counseling or job training. Occupational therapy is the link between prompt and adequate medical management of upper extremity conditions and a successful recovery. It is about allowing my patients to function normally in their daily lives. As a Miami occupational therapist I aim at providing highly effective non-operative interventions, preventative care and post-surgical rehabilitation for a wide variety of upper extremity disorders, ranging from a simple injuries such as fingertip injuries to very complex ones, like e.g. replanted extremities. My patients, who suffer from chronic conditions, such as arthritis, or neurologic conditions will benefit from treatment through proper education on how to protect joints, alleviate pain or swelling of the joints. I will also make recommendations for adaptive equipment or devices to improve function and maintain pain-free mobility. A Miami occupational therapist such as myself can employ a variety of tools and techniques including but not limited to: management of pain and swelling, activity or exercise programs, wound and scar care, custom orthotic fabrication.
As a Miami occupational therapy practitioner I believe in executing a holistic perspective and approach to my patients’ in order to see their rapid and permanent recovery. In a strive to achieve yet better results I may consult or combine my expertise with expertise of professionals in physical therapy, dermatology, orthopaedics, psychologists etc. As much as I enjoy being an occupational therapist, I also find my job and profession an important mission and acknowledge the responsibility it carries along. People put a lot of faith and hope into Miami occupational therapy treatment methods so I always want to be sure that both my work and expertize, and my patients’ efforts lead to successful outcomes – their full physical recovery.
