Occupational therapy Miami – Do’s and Don’t of Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology taping can be a great treatment solution for patients struggling with sports injuries. It is a rehabilitative technique that involves taping of injured body parts to facilitate the natural healing process that doesn’t influence the range of motion of the given joint/muscle1. If done, it can be very beneficial in treating various medical conditions – not only does it provide support to the injured body part but it also helps it to rehabilitate. There are a few things to know before applying kinesio tapes. In this article, we will list and explain the “Do’s and Don’ts” of kinesiology taping.

1. DON’T apply the tape on damp surface

Applying the tape right after a shower, when the skin is still slightly damp, will cause the tape to not stick firmly enough. Is it very important to apply the tape on clean skin but make sure to dry the taping area completely to stop the tape from coming off. Tip: you can rub the skin with a bit of alcohol to make the tape stick even more firmly. But also make sure it’s dry before putting the tape on!

2. DON’T touch the sticky side of the tape

The sweat/grease from your hands will prevent the tape from sticking properly. When applying the tape, remove the backing slightly at one end and attach it to the skin. Holding on to the other end of the tape, slowly remove the rest of the backing, stretching the tape in the process. Tip: you can activate the adhesive by warming up the tape with your hands after you apply it to the skin.

3. DON’T remove the tape immediately before showering/swimming

No need to remove the tape before having contact with water as it is waterproofed. All you need to do after your shower/swim is to gently dry it with a towel.
