One Main Reason Your Cortisone Shot Failed

One Main Reason Your Cortisone Shot Failed

Hi, I’m Hoang Tran, and I help people who suffer from hand and wrist pain get real relief—without relying solely on pills or injections.

At my clinic, Hands-on Therapy Services, we see a lot of clients after they’ve had what they call a “failed cortisone shot.” If you’ve ever gotten a cortisone injection in your wrist or hand and felt like it didn’t help (or maybe even made things worse), you’re not alone.

Let me tell you why that shot might not have worked—and what you can do instead to actually get better.

One Main Reason Your Cortisone Shot Failed

“I Got the Shot, But It Didn’t Work…”

One young woman recently called my office, frustrated and in pain. She had wrist pain in both wrists that had been bothering her for months—maybe even years. She had already gotten a cortisone shot, but it didn’t help. In fact, she didn’t want to get another one because the first one did nothing for her.

Sound familiar?

If you’re like her and got a cortisone injection for wrist pain… and it didn’t help… this blog post is for you.

Here’s Why Your Cortisone Shot Failed

The number one reason why cortisone injections fail is that they’re often treating the wrong area. Sure, you feel the pain in your wrist. But the actual problem? It might be somewhere completely different.

Let me explain.

Sometimes wrist pain is just a symptom of something going on in your elbow.

Or your shoulder.

Or even your neck or back.

In the case of the young woman who called me, she had a combination of issues. Her elbow was stiff, her shoulders were weak, and she had some postural problems in her back. All of this was putting stress on her wrists.

So when she got that cortisone injection in her wrist, it didn’t do anything. Because the root cause of her pain wasn’t actually the wrist.

Why Cortisone Sometimes Misses the Mark

Cortisone shots are often given for:

The problem is, they don’t always target the real cause of your symptoms.

You might have inflammation in your wrist or hand, yes—but what’s causing the inflammation? Is it weakness somewhere else? Poor movement habits? A past injury that’s been ignored? If you don’t treat the cause, the inflammation will just keep coming back, and cortisone can only mask the pain for so long.

The Hidden Costs of Cortisone Injections

Cortisone might give you temporary relief. But if it’s injected into the wrong place—or if the inflammation isn’t the real issue—you could end up in more pain than before.

And cortisone isn’t harmless. It comes with side effects, like:

  • Thinning of the skin
  • Weakening of tendons
  • Risk of infection
  • Long-term joint damage can occur if overused

Plus, if the doctor has an “off” day or misses the exact spot? The shot might not help at all.

So What Should You Do Instead?

First, don’t panic. If your shot didn’t help, it doesn’t mean you’re doomed to surgery or that you’ll have to live with the pain forever.

Instead, here’s what I recommend:

Get a second opinion.

Before you get another injection (or even think about surgery), talk to someone who can assess your whole arm, not just the spot that hurts.

Look at the bigger picture.

Your wrist pain may be related to your posture, your shoulder strength, how you use your hands during the day, or a past injury that’s never fully healed.

Try natural, hands-on solutions.

At my clinic, we help people improve their mobility, reduce pain, and regain function without relying on injections or pills. We dig deep to find the root cause of your symptoms—and treat that.
