How to Identify a Pinched Nerve in the Neck
If you are feeling sensations down your arm….you might have a pinched nerve at the neck.
Here are some symptoms you might be feeling:
Numbness or tingling
The heaviness of your arm
Pain that radiates
There’s a lot of complexities of a pinched nerve just because it’s “pinched” in one area but you don’t FEEL pain there….you feel pain somewhere else.
Believe it or not, you don’t have to rush to get an x-ray or MRI.
The first step is conservative treatment from a trusted OT or PT who can evaluate how well or limited you are moving and what some of the muscle imbalances are creating it.
Xrays and MRIs have their place to help diagnose –
Here’s what we do at our therapy clinic and what you should expect when going to your therapy session.
Look at the whole spine – bc all the bones are stacked into each other and one doesn't move without the other
Look at the shoulders and do special tests to rule in or out the shoulder being an issue.
Look at how the nerves are moving within the whole neck and arm complex. It’s a great way to look and make sure it’s not a hand problem, elbow, or shoulder problem.
During the 1st session, we should see some kind of change. If it’s really bad…we might need a second follow-up session but usually, there has to be SOME change when we are looking for the right things.
If there’s NO change – that might lead us to suspect something else and a responsible therapist will refer you to the correct specialist. For neck issues, I usually refer to an ortho-spine or neurosurgeon.
If it’s more of a nerve-related issue and NOT so much a bony issue – a neurologist is a great referral source for you.
If I think it’s only a hand type of issue, then I’ll refer to a hand surgeon
Everything else…your first line of defense to help you get rid of a pinched nerve is a trusted OT or PT who specializes in working with neck and nerve types issues.
